On behalf of the African Union Commission, H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the Commission, conveys her heartfelt condolence to the family, Government and People of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on the passing of President Hugo Chavez Frias, a great revolutionary, at the age of 58. The news of his passing came to us with shock and grave sadness.
We recall the tremendous contributions of President Chavez to the economic emancipation of his people, his exceptional leadership and enviable qualities. As internationalist revolutionary he was indeed a friend of Africa, who together with other leaders spearheaded the establishment of the Africa-South America (ASA) partnership in 2006.
While we mourn his irreparable loss, we however take solace in the fact that his resounding achievements to the cause of humankind in general and his people in particular, will out-live him and imprint his name in the annals of history!
We sympathize with his family, the Government and People of Venezuela at this moment of grief and join many of his admirers across the world in praying for the repose of his soul. May the Almighty grant you all the grace and fortitude to bear the great loss.
Nkosazana C. Dlamini-Zuma (Dr.)
