Addis Ababa, 28 August 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat is delighted to note that the 23 August 2017 General Election marked an important milestone in the history of Republic of Angola. Once again, the people of the Angola have demonstrated their resolve for continuous search for democratic and participatory governance in their country.

The Chairperson would like to congratulate the people of Angola for turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right to choose their leaders. He commends the smooth organisation of the polls and wishes to extend his appreciation to the political parties, candidates and the electorate in general for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process. He urges all the political parties and candidates to continue exercising their commitment to peace and democracy. He implores them to resolve any disputes arising from the outcome of the elections through legally established channels.

The Chairperson further reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission in sustaining collaborative efforts with the people of the Republic of Angola towards consolidating democracy, peace and stability, all of which are key to the socio-economic development of the country.
