Preparatory Meeting for the 7th Africa- Arab Regional Platform and 6th High Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction Meeting held in Cairo

Cairo, 14th May 2018: Senior Officials from the African Union Commission, the League of Arab States (LAS), Representatives of the Government of Tunisia, and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), met on 14 & 15 May 2018, in Cairo, the Arab Republic of Egypt, to discuss the preparations for the 7th Africa -Arab Regional Platform and 6th High-Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction, (DRR), which will be held from 9 – 13 October 2018, in Tunisia.

The preparatory Meeting provide an opportunity to discuss with key stakeholders involved in the preparation and hosting of the upcoming Africa-Arab regional platform and the high level meeting on DRR, and progress of the preparation and suggestions actions to help move on properly and in timely manner with the on going preparation. 

It is worth noting that the 7th Africa-Arab Regional Platform and 6th High-Level Meeting on DRR are aim to take stock of progress made in the implementation of the Sendai Framework and to reaffirm political commitment to achieving its implementation and thereby contribute to the realization of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The outcome of the two events will also form the basis of the two regions Common Positions at the 2019 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Africa-Arab Regional Platform and High-Level Meeting on DRR will also provide the regions with opportunities to share knowledge, experiences and best practices in advancing disaster risk reduction in the context of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-20130) in Africa.

The 7th session of Africa Regional Platform and 6th High Level Meeting, will be convened as part of the “Building Disaster Resilience to Natural Hazards in Sub-Saharan African Regions, Countries and Communities Program, which is being implemented in Africa as part of a cooperation between the European Union (EU) and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP).
