1.0 INTRODUCTION

Gender-based violence (GBV) including harmful practices are pervasive issues in Africa. Despite efforts to address these challenges, they continue to hinder gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Gender financing plays a crucial role in providing the necessary resources to prevent and respond to these issues effectively.

The sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 11 to 22 March 2024 under the Primary Theme: Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective.

The African Union Commission, through the Department for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, will be organizing a Side Event on the margins of the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. The side event highlights the African Union’s commitment to addressing gender inequalities; and the protection of women and girls against all forms of abuse including harmful practices and online child sexual exploitation. This commitment is a critical pillar in delivering on Agenda 2063 - the “Africa We Want”. The event will also be launching an African Union Observatory which will incorporate indicators on harmful practices.
