LAUNCH OF GLOBAL HUNGER INDEX  2025

INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

What:              The African Union Commission, through the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia, and the Alliance2015 members is organizing a high-level launching event of the Global Hunger Index 2025 under the theme “20 Years of Tracking Progress: Time to Recommit to Zero Hunger”

        When:         Tuesday, 10th March 2026

        Time:          09H00-14H00

Where:       AU Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

        Objective:

The main objectives of the GHI 2025 launch are to:

        • Present and discuss the key findings of the Global Hunger Index 2025 and their implications for Ethiopia and the region.
        • Highlight Ethiopia’s national efforts and commitments toward achieving food and nutrition security.
        • Showcase the role of CAADP and continental initiatives in accelerating progress toward Zero Hunger.
        • Facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogue among government, research, private sector, civil society, and development partners to identify solutions for sustainable food systems transformation.
        • Provide a platform for youth and women innovators to showcase community-level contributions to reducing food insecurity and malnutrition.

        Expected outcomes

        • Improved understanding of Ethiopia’s and Africa’s progress and gaps in addressing hunger and malnutrition.
        • Strengthened connection between GHI findings, CAADP commitments, and national Zero Hunger efforts.
        • Renewed policy and programmatic commitments by government and partners toward ending hunger.
        • Enhanced visibility for local innovations led by youth, women, and communities.

        Participants:

Target participants of the launching event include African Union Commission, relevant ministries and government agencies of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE), development partners and donors (FAO, WFP, EU, EU member states etc.), CSOs and local implementing partners, research and academic institutions, private sector and agribusiness actors, as well as youth and women representatives.

        Background:

The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is an annual publication jointly produced by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and Concern Worldwide, providing a multidimensional measure of hunger at global, regional, and national levels. Each edition of the GHI serves as both a benchmark of progress and a call to action toward achieving Zero Hunger (SDG 2 and CAADP).

The Global Hunger Index (GHI), launched two decades ago, was founded on the belief that combining knowledge, political commitment, and action could drive meaningful progress in the fight against hunger. Over the past twenty years, this vision has largely proven true, with important advances in reducing food insecurity and malnutrition globally. However, the 20th edition of the GHI arrives at a time of deepening concern about global food security. Development funding is tightening; humanitarian systems are overstretched, and in many regions, hunger persists or is even worsening. These statements only partly reflect the lived realities in the most affected regions, where recurring food crises are threatening the futures of millions.

Anchored in the theme “20 Years of Tracking Progress: Time to Recommit to Zero Hunger,” the event will also emphasize how continental frameworks such as the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) are driving Africa’s commitment to end hunger. By promoting agricultural transformation, inclusive growth, and resilience, CAADP continues to play a vital role in achieving Zero Hunger across the continent and aligning national priorities— such as Ethiopia’s food and nutrition security strategies and initiatives—with Africa’s broader development agenda.
