About

The Infrastructure and Energy Department (IED) of the African Union Commission is among the departments of the African Union Commission, the Secretariat of the African Union. The department leads effort to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063 infrastructure programmes as well as the AU’s activities aimed at promoting, coordinating, implementing and monitoring programmes and policies on infrastructure development, transport, energy resources, information communications technology (ICT) as well as postal services and at the regional and continental levels.

The Department also facilitates the implementation of collaborative programmes in collaboration and partnership with Member States, AU Organs, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), different Pan-African Institutions as well as development partners.

Divided into three major divisions and a coordination Unit the department is in charge of the following key Agenda 2063 projects: the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), the African Integrated Rail Network (AIRN), Grand Inga Dam, African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) and its component of Continental Power Systems Masterplan (CMP), Cyber Security, Digital Transformation Strategy (DTS). IED also oversees the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) an African Union initiative for interconnecting, integrating and transforming Africa in Transport, Energy, ICT and transboundary water management.
