The Trade Observatory Unit of the African Union Commission is a specialised technical unit responsible for strengthening trade intelligence, data analysis, and evidence-based policymaking at the continental level through the African Trade Observatory. The Unit supports the African Union’s trade and integration agenda by generating reliable insights on trade flows, market access conditions, and structural trade trends across Africa.
The Unit plays a central role in monitoring and analysing intra-African trade, providing analytical support for the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader regional integration objectives
The Trade Observatory Unit is responsible for:
- Trade Data Management and Analysis
Compiling, harmonising, and analysing trade data from Member States and international sources to produce accurate, comparable, and policy-relevant trade statistics.
- Policy Support and Advisory Services
Providing analytical inputs to support trade negotiations, policy formulation, and implementation processes at continental, regional, and national levels.
- Monitoring Trade Integration
Tracking trends in intra-African trade, product diversification, and regional value chains to assess progress toward Africa’s integration and industrialisation goals.
- Market Transparency and Intelligence
Improving access to trade information for policymakers, institutions, and economic actors by translating complex data into usable insights.
- Knowledge Generation and Reporting
Contributing to AU trade reports, briefs, and technical studies that inform strategic decision-making and stakeholder engagement.
