The Citizens and Diaspora Organizations Directorate (CIDO) is responsible for implementing the African Union’s vision of a people-oriented and driven organization based on a partnership between governments, civil society and diasporas. The directorate consists of the civil society and diaspora divisions.
The civil society division is responsible for mainstreaming civil society engagement into the AU’s processes, departments and organs. Within the migration and development nexus, CIDO, through the diaspora division is building a global African family by ensuring the participation of the African diaspora in the integration and development agenda of the continent.
Article 3 of the Protocol on Amendments of the Constitutive Act of the African Union recognises the important role the African Diaspora has to play in the development of the continent and states that the Union will “invite and encourage the full participation of the African Diaspora as an important part of our Continent, in the building of the African Union.”
“The African Diaspora consists of peoples of African origin living outside the continent, irrespective of their citizenship and nationality and who are willing to contribute to the development of the continent and building of the African Union.”
