Meeting of the Human Rights and Transitional Justice Cluster of the African Governance Architecture

Arusha, Tanzania, 24 August, 2017: The Department of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC) convened a meeting of the Human Rights and Transitional Justice Cluster of the African Governance Architecture from the 24 – 26 August 2017 in Arusha, Tanzania. The purpose of the meeting was to provide inputs to the draft plan with the aim of finalising the draft of 10 Years Action Plan on the Human and Peoples Rights Decade in Africa before submitting it to wider stakeholder consultations.
The hosts of the meeting were the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights (AfCHPR) and it was attended by the representatives of the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights (ACHPR), the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) and the African Union Advisory Board on Corruption (AUABC) and the African Peer Review Mechanim (APRM).
On behalf of H.E Commissioner for Political Affairs of the AUC, Amb. Salah Hammad remarked that the meeting was called to validate the draft Action Plan before it is finalised and submitted to the AU policy organs for adoption. Amb. Hammad furthermore stated that the meeting will be proceeded by the Youth Consultation where the draft Action Plan will be discussed and the upcoming Pre Gender Forum and High Level Dialogue on Democracy, Governance and Human Rights.
On behalf of the hosts, the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights, Dr Nouhou Diallo Deputy Registrar welcomed all participants and further stated that the aim of this meeting was to make meaningful contributions into the Draft Plan and eventually finalise it for implementation.
The draft Action Plan emanated from the Declaration by the AU Assembly (Assembly/AU/Decl.1(XXVII) WHICH DECLARED 2016 – 2026 as the Decade of Human Rights in Africa. The Action Plan aims to operationalise the declaration with the intention of enhancing AU Member States compliance to the continental, regional and national human rights standards and norms as well as strengthen the collaboration and cooperation among human rights actors at all levels in Africa.
