Addis Ababa, 14 October 2017: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the signing of the intra-Palestinian agreement, in Cairo, Egypt, on 12 October 2017. He commends the President of the State of Palestine, Mr Mahmoud Abbas, and all other concerned stakeholders on this achievement.

He expresses the AU’s deep appreciation to the Government of Egypt for its crucial role in facilitating this agreement and encourages it to pursue its efforts.

The Chairperson of the Commission looks forward to the full implementation of the agreement, in particular the steps agreed upon to enable the Palestinian Government to assume its responsibilities in Gaza. He encourages the Palestinian stakeholders to continue to work tirelessly towards furthering their unity. He stresses the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Chairperson Faki seizes this opportunity to reiterate the AU’s solidarity with the Palestinian people towards the exercise of their inalienable rights, as well as its commitment to a two-state solution, in line with the relevant AU decisions and Security Council resolutions.
