      The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government to kick off in Addis Ababa on 14 February 2026

      INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

      WHAT:           The Thirty-Nineth (39th) Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) to start deliberating on its agenda items. The Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the AU is the supreme decision-making body of the AU comprising all member states’ leaders and plays a crucial role in shaping policies and addressing continental challenges, in line with the objectives of Agenda 2063.

      WHEN:           14–15 February 2026

      TIME:             9:00 hr – 11:00hr  EAT

      WHERE:        African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

      VENUE:         Mandela Conference Hall.

      The official opening of the Summit will feature the AU anthem and opening remarks, followed by the announcement of the new bureau of the African Union Assembly for the year 2026, family photos of the Heads of State and Government, and the launch of the AU Theme of the Year 2026.

      The Heads of State and Government will then consider and adopt the following:

      • Report on the work done on the Three Thematic Agenda items of the African union – (Peace & Security, Integration & Sustainable Development and Africa’s voice) .
      • Report on the African Union Institutional Reforms.
      • Report on the Republic of South Africa’s experience in the G20 presidency and Report on African Union participation in G20.
      •  Appointment of Ten (10) Members of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union.
      • Consideration of the report on conflict situations in Sudan and South Sudan, and the situation in the Sahel Region.
      • Presentation of the reports of the Committees of the Assembly Forum of Heads of State and Government participating in the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM forum).
      •  AUDA-NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee.
      • Committee of Ten (C-10) Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council.
      •  Heads of State and Government Committee on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).
      • Assembly Committee on AfCFTA and Assembly Committee on Africa CDC.
      • Presentation of the Annual Report of the Chairperson of the AU Commission, including Champion on Agenda 2063, among others.

      Journalists are invited to cover the official opening and closing ceremony of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government the African Union on 14 and 15 February 2026.
